3 people died and 1 person remains missing after a kraken attacked a pier in New Rock, Washington on Monday. The mid-afternoon attack injured 5 others as the pier collapsed into Puget Sound.
First Kraken Attack In Over 20 Years
Crabbers and fishermen fell into Puget Sound today as a kraken smashed the pier in New Rock, a tiny town near Des Moines. Three people died when pillars trapped them underwater. They drowned before first responders could rescue them. One person remains unaccounted for.
Emergency Director, Caitlyn Thompson, said this is the first kraken attack in over 20 years. “The last time we had a giant squid attack was the Bangor incident in 1998,” Thompson said. “That led to damaged submarines, but no deaths.”
Witnesses reported the kraken may have taken one crabber out to sea. “I saw a tentacle wrapped around a man’s waist. It was swinging him around like a toy,” said Bonnie Sinclair, a resident of Des Moines. “The kraken pulled him underwater when the police started shooting at it.”
Washington state emergency teams arrived at the scene within 5 minutes of the attack. However, it was too late to save some victims. Five other people fell into the water. They sustained bumps and bruises, and two people received broken arms. By 3 PM, the area was under control and the kraken had swum away.
New Rock City Commissioner Tim Titlebaum said damage estimates will be conducted once the clean-up finishes. The commissioner will also ask the Maritime Force Protection Unit (MFPU) in Bangor to add 2 more patrols every day for a month.
Officials will hold the names of the victims and missing until they contact the next of kin. A news briefing will take place on Wednesday, June 22nd at noon.
Chronology of the Attack
At 2:30 PM, crabbers and fishermen noticed swirling and bubbling water about 50-feet off the front of the pier. A few minutes later, something yanked their crab pots and fish lines, broke the pot chains, and pulled them into the sea. The water then went still.
Five minutes later, the kraken rammed the pier, throwing at least a dozen people into the water. Witnesses described the beastly squid as purple with black disk eyes the size of a pickup tire. Its exposed head was as large as a fire engine. The kraken’s tentacles brushed two people and shredded their clothes and skin. One victim described the feeling as a cheese grater running over him, and its suckers had needle-like teeth on them.
By 2:40 PM, first responders arrived and began to engage with the monster. Police fired their handguns and assault rifles at the beast’s eyes, head and tentacles to free a man. The gunfire stunned the kraken and it pulled away from the pier. Fire fighters dove into the water and pulled victims out. They performed CPR on at least 4 victims who were then taken to a local hospital in grave condition.
The attack took place within 15 minutes and police secured the pier by 3 PM. At this time, a search-and-rescue team began to recover the bodies of people trapped under the collapsed pillars. Fishing poles, smashed crab pots and purple skin from the kraken dotted the rocky beach. Among the debris, search crews found an ice cream stand menu, with a Summer Solstice special printed on it, and a ripped crabber boot.
This is a developing story and it will be updated daily.
